Britannia foundation donation transforms Devon playground

August 09, 2011

Children at a Plymouth primary school are hop, skip and jumping for joy after scooping a £2,500 donation from Britannia, part of The Co-operative Financial Services, to transform their playground and make maths fun outside the classroom.

The donation, made by the financial services provider’s charitable Foundation, has replaced Holbeton Primary School’s much loved but faded markings to provide a new colourful, fun space to deliver numeracy lessons encouraging interest and enthusiasm in maths and numbers for its 4 to 11 year olds.

Unveiling the new markings, Kathryn Garnett, Headteacher at Holbeton Primary School, said: “We are thrilled with the success of our application to Britannia’s charitable Foundation, our old markings were over ten years old and had become difficult to see. The school is always exploring new ways to challenge and engage its children and places a high emphasis on developing skills and understanding of maths in a fun, enjoyable and creative learning environment. We call it our ‘outside numeracy theatre’ and learning through play can really help to make numeracy fun while developing key skills.”

Britannia’s charitable Foundation is one way the member-owned financial services provider gives back to the communities it serves - developing literacy and numeracy skills underpins everyday activities both inside and outside the classroom and, can lay strong foundations for good financial capability and money management in later life.

Elaine Clews, manager of Britannia’s charitable Foundation, added: “Britannia’s charitable Foundation can make real and lasting differences to local communities and it is delighted to have been able to support the school’s initiatives to raise levels of enthusiasm, confidence and understanding in this key area of the curriculum.”

Britannia’s charitable Foundation welcomes applications from other voluntary groups, charities and schools. It supports projects to promote improvements to education, with a particular focus on numeracy and financial capability.
