Co-operative Food provides tasty treats for reptiles

October 08, 2013

Animals being looked after at a reptile rescue centre on the Isle of Skye are getting tasty meals of fruit, vegetables and salad, thanks to The Co-operative Food.

The Co-operative Food store in Broadford is donating unsold food, which is beyond its “use by” date and so cannot be offered to shoppers, to the village’s Skye Serpentarium, which looks after rescued and abandoned animals.

The regular deliveries help feed dozens of animals at the centre, including iguanas, lizards, tortoises and giant snails.

Marjory Fraser, Store Manager of the Co-operative Food in Broadford, said: “The Skye Serpentarium does such a great job looking after the animals in their care, and as a community retailer we’re really pleased to be able to help them in such a practical way.

“We donate food that is beyond it’s ‘use by’ date, so it can’t sold or even given away for human consumption, but it’s still okay for the animals.”

The Skye Serpentarium collects the food from The Co-operative Food store several times each week, depending what’s available and what they need to cater for the animals’ dietary requirements.

Among the creatures’ favourites are apples, pears, grapes, cucumbers, salad leaves and green vegetables.

Catherine Shearer set up the Skye Serpentarium, in Broadford, with her husband Alex in 1991. Originally it was an exhibition and education centre, but over the years it has developed to provide a refuge for abandoned and rescued reptiles and amphibians.

She said: “We rely on donations, sponsorship and people’s goodwill to help keep up the work we do here. Feeding the animals takes a lot of resources, so having a regular supply of food from The Co-operative, which would otherwise go to waste, is a huge help to us.”
