Peru puts Co-operative's Fairtrade chocolate on the map

November 08, 2011

Do you know your deep earthy flavours from your heady spice notes?

A new breed of chocolate connoisseur is emerging as shoppers choose their chocolate in the same way as they choose their wine – by the country it comes from.

The country where the cocoa beans are grown helps to determine the flavour of the chocolate. Already sourcing its Fairtrade chocolate from the Dominican Republic and Ghana, The Co-operative is now adding Peruvian chocolate to its premium Truly Irresistible Fairtrade chocolate range.

New Co-operative TI range

Growers in Peru are providing cocoa for three new block bars of the premium own-brand Fairtrade chocolate - Creamy Milk, Dark Chocolate Hazelnut and Dark Chocolate and Cranberry.

Peruvian cocoa beans have a characteristically powerful berry fruit flavour with a strong kick and a slightly bitter finish. The cocoa beans from Ghana are best known for their intense richness and deep, classic taste, giving The Co-operative’s Truly Irresistible Fairtrade Ghanaian chocolate a bold, strong flavour. In contrast, The Co-operative’s Fairtrade chocolate from the Dominican Republic has a more delicate flavour with a hint of spice and fruity undertones.

As well as receiving a guaranteed price for their crop, Fairtrade growers receive a Fairtrade premium to invest in social projects chosen by themselves, such as providing clean water and improved medical facilities. The Co-operative, which is the only retailer to have converted its entire own-brand block chocolate to Fairtrade, also provides additional support and development funding for its Fairtrade cocoa growers.

In stores now, the Peruvian chocolate comes from Acopagro, a co-operative of growers based in the province of San Martin in the Amazonian highlands. Acopagro, which is Peru’s largest co-operative with more than 18,000 members, will use the Fairtrade investment to improve infrastructure and long-term sustainability, as well as supporting local communities with improved education and other projects.

Jenny Dixon, The Co-operative’s chocolate buyer, said: “Shoppers want to know where their chocolate comes from, as they’re increasingly choosing their chocolate by the origin of its cocoa beans. Tasting your chocolate is like tasting a glass of wine, with your first bite making a striking impression before the flavours start to permeate your mouth. And, like a nice glass of wine, the trick is to savour it and not just gobble it up all in one go.

“The Co-operative has championed the FAIRTRADE Mark since its inception, helping the UK become the largest Fairtrade market in the world, and we are proud to be the only supermarket whose entire own-brand block chocolate range is Fairtrade, and to be extending our commitment to cocoa growers in Peru.”
