The Co-operative announces new city centre Food store in Glasgow

October 26, 2012

The Co-operative Group has announced plans to open a new flagship food store in Glasgow city centre.

It has agreed a deal to relocate its existing small convenience store, at 403 Sauchiehall Street, to a new larger unit at 143 Sauchiehall Street.

Existing staff will transfer to the new store, and a number of new jobs will be created. The new store is scheduled to open in December and will have a sales area of around 3,000 sq ft.

Brian Lochrie, Regional Acquisitions Manager for The Co-operative Food, said: “A new larger store in such a busy part of the city centre is a great boost for The Co-operative Food, and will complement our existing outlets in Glasgow. We’re looking forward to serving even more city centre shoppers, and are confident the new store will be an asset to Glasgow.”

David Simmons, Director of Jones Lang LaSalle, who acted as agents for The Co-operative Food, said: “143 Sauchiehall Street will fulfil The Co-operative Food’s desire for a large flagship store in one of the busiest retail areas in Glasgow. Although Sauchiehall Street has suffered, like many, during the economic downturn with increasing vacancies, the street retains an impressively high level of footfall.”

The Co-operative, which has nearby stores in Union Street and George Street, is owned by its members, who have a say in how the business is run and who each receive a share of profits, which they can choose to keep, or to donate all or part to local good causes.

The current, smaller, Co-operative Food store in Sauchiehall Street is being sold to an independent retailer.
