Co-op sees 60% increase in online funeral planning

March 21, 2016
  • UK adults plan funerals online 5 years younger than offline
  • Online becomes fastest growing channel for creating funeral plans

Online funeral planning is increasing in popularity as sales of Co-op Funeralcare’s online funeral plans have increased by 60% in the last 12 months, according to new business data released today by the UK’s leading funeral provider.*

Following the launch of the funeral provider’s online proposition, business data highlights that those adults making their final wishes online are doing so at a younger age. The average age of putting plans in place online is now five years younger than those who make funeral plans within one of Co-op’s 900 funeral homes.**

When asked why this was the case, over two thirds (67%) of Funeralcare clients who purchased a plan online said they chose to as it was more convenient and a further a third (31%) said they opted for online as it was cheaper. *** The leading funeral provider has also seen a trend towards adults putting online funeral plans in place for their parents.

Commenting on the increase in online sales David Collingwood, Operations Director for Co-op Funeralcare said:

“As many as 91%**** of UK adults do not have a funeral plan in place. It’s encouraging that our online planning service is helping to combat this, as more people are putting their final wishes in place at a younger age.

“Advances in technology coupled with life getting busier means that people can forget to make a funeral plan, potentially leaving loved ones with a legacy of financial worries. Whilst it’s common for people to feel uneasy thinking about their own mortality, taking the time to plan can help to safeguard loved ones financially, against the rising cost of funerals, as well as providing them with peace of mind.

“We’re very focused on helping to tackle the taboo of talking about death and believe it should be as easy as possible for people to communicate their wishes and make plans. Online planning is one way in which we’re doing this by making our funeral planning service easily accessible at any time.”

Co-op Funeralcare offers bronze, silver and gold set burial and set cremation plans online. Co-op funeral plans are fully guaranteed and so cover all costs of a chosen burial or cremation plan, meaning that loved ones won’t be left with any financial surprises.

The funeral provider held its 2015 funeral plan prices into 2016 and is currently offering its 5 million members a £250 discount on its market leading funeral plans, meaning that Co-op members can save up to £510 over other national plans.*****
