October 02, 2009

Group Chief Executive, Peter Marks, was amongst the panel of distinguished guests at the judging day of the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards, sponsored by The Co-operative .

Peter Marks was joined by the likes of Emma Bunton, Ben Shepherd, Dame Kelly Holmes and Daily Mirror editor Richard Wallace at London’s prestigious Grosvenor House to choose this year’s Pride of Britain winners.

The judges were tasked with choosing the deserving winners from a shortlist of candidates, following a record number of entries this year from the Daily Mirror, online submissions and over 4,900 Co-operative outlets up and down the country.

Categories included Child of Courage, Outstanding Bravery, and The Co-operative Local Champion - a specially-created award to recognise and celebrate the achievements of those who have made a positive difference to their community.

Hosted by Carol Vorderman, the awards are again supported by HRH Prince Charles and the Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Gordon Brown. Every year, many of the nation's biggest names from the worlds of showbusiness, sport and politics, honour the heroic winners.

Among the A-listers who have taken part include David and Victoria Beckham, Sir Paul McCartney, Dame Helen Mirren, Bono, Sir Michael Caine, J K Rowling, Kylie Minogue, Kevin Spacey, Take That, Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas to name but a few.

Peter Marks reflected on a difficult day of decision-making, saying: “The prospect of having to choose between all the winners was a daunting one. Everyone who was on the shortlist deserves recognition, and there were so many fantastic, humbling stories to choose from.

“This is now The Co-operative’s second year sponsoring the awards, and I have been lucky enough to sit on the judging panel twice. I have come across some truly remarkable stories, and it’s an honour to be a part of recognising these extraordinary individuals. I believe that as a panel, we made the right decision on the eventual winners, and I look forward to watching them receive their awards on the night.”
