RNID and The Co-operative partnership raises record-breaking £3.7 million

February 09, 2010

At a time when the level of charitable giving in the UK is static, national deafness and hearing loss charity RNID, has received a much larger then anticipated £3.7 million from its Charity of the Year Partnership with The Co-operative.

Beating the initial £2 million fundraising target, this £3.7 million is a record amount of money raised for RNID, and the largest amount ever raised for one charity by The Co-operative’s family of businesses, including food retail, travel, funerals, farming, banking and insurance.

This was achieved when The Co-operative Bank’s annual Ethical Consumerism Report shows that charitable giving in the UK has almost flat lined.

The money was raised throughout the year by thousands of Co-operative staff by a variety of events and activities like masquerade balls, a Santa Dash, sponsored runs to head shaves and karaoke events. The money will fund the expansion of the charity’s vital Hear to Help service. Hear to Help trains volunteers, many of whom have a hearing loss, to provide support to hearing aid users in their local communities.

In a year where the recession hit the UK and charitable giving was down by over 11% , this is a fantastic achievement for both parties and demonstrates that businesses at the heart of communities across the UK will always have loyal supporters.

Peter Marks, Group Chief Executive of The Co-operative Group, said: “Our colleagues have a great appetite for fundraising especially when they have been inspired by such a worthwhile charity.

“A partnership of this kind is also very important for morale because we’ve had a great time fundraising and are proud that together, our staff, members and customers have helped raise this fantastic amount for RNID.”

RNID Chief Executive, Jackie Ballard, said: “This is a fantastic achievement and an amazing amount to be raised in a charity partnership. It has been a pleasure to work with such a dedicated team of people who can be proud in the knowledge that this money will be used by RNID to make a significant impact on the lives of people who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as encouraging people to value their hearing and take action on hearing loss. Not only has The Co-operative beaten its fundraising goal by a mile, but it has embraced RNID’s cause and helped us to raise awareness of the impact of hearing loss and the importance of checking your hearing regularly.”
