The Co-operative wins top industry title
The Co-operative has won the prestigious title of Retailer of the Year at the Scottish Retail Excellence Awards, organised by the Daily Record and Scottish Business Insider, in association with the Scottish Retail Consortium.
The consumer-owned retailer has embarked upon the most ambitious rebranding programme in UK corporate history and is upgrading and converting its outlets, including almost 500 in Scotland, to its new business identity which unites its family of businesses including food stores, travel, pharmacy, funeral and bank branches. More than £70 million has been invested in Scotland so far through the rebranding programme.
The converted outlets are helping Co-operative businesses deliver strong sales uplifts, contributing to the growing financial success of the business and a highly visible representation of The Co-operative on the High Street.
Beating Asda and Scotmid to win the coveted title of Retailer of the Year at the event in Glasgow’s Marriott Hotel, the judges said that The Co-operative had demonstrated leading performance across all aspects of its businesses in Scotland, including clear brand values, commitment to product and store innovation and active involvement in the communities it serves. In a second coup for the community-owned retailer, The Co-operative also scooped the Green Retailer of the Year award for the second year running, pipping Sainsbury’s and Asda to the post.
The Co-operative was commended for its energy consumption reduction and its £2 million Green Energy for Schools programme, enabling schools across the UK to install solar panels at no cost to themselves.
The Co-operative’s Chief Officer for Scotland, John McNeill, pictured below receiving the award, said: “Retailer of the Year is by far the most prestigious award in retailing north of the border, not just for the food sector, but across the retail spectrum. It is a fantastic achievement for The Co-operative’s family of businesses in Scotland, and is yet another milestone in the renaissance of The Co-operative. It is also a real testament to the hard work and commitment of the 8,000 staff in our Scottish stores and branches who are truly the ambassadors of our new Co-operative brand; this is their award and truly well deserved.
“We are also delighted to win Green Retailer of the Year for the second time and look forward to developing our environmental credentials even further.”
