The Co-operative Group has today announced the appointment of Mike Bracken as Chief Digital Officer. Mike will join the Group in October 2015 from his current dual role as the Government’s Chief Data Officer and its Executive Director of Digital.

At the Co-operative, Mike will be responsible for driving the Group’s digital content and strategy. One area of particular focus will be to develop the Group’s digital engagement with its members, establishing what membership can mean in a digital age to help support the Group purpose of “Championing a better way to do business for you and your communities”.

Since 2011 Mike has worked for the Cabinet Office as Executive Director of Digital and more recently was also appointed as the Government’s first Chief Data Officer. During his time with the Government, Mike has led a transformational approach to public services – creating ‘simpler, clearer & faster’ services on GOV.UK, reshaping Government’s relationship with ‘IT’, and redesigning services based on the needs of their users.

Richard Pennycook, Co-operative Group Chief Executive, said:

“Mike brings with him outstanding and ground-breaking industry experience and will make a major contribution to our long-term recovery. His appointment is another clear demonstration that we are attracting the best talent in Britain as we rebuild our business.”

Mike Bracken added:

“I’m delighted to take on this exciting role with the Co-operative. The Group’s ambition to deliver an improved digital experience for members will be fundamental to achieving the rebuild programme it has embarked upon.”

At the Co-operative, Mike will report to Richard Pennycook and will sit on the Group Executive Committee. His appointment is subject to SRA approval.
