Giant open air street gallery arrives in Perth
A giant open air street gallery of photographs has arrived in Perth as part of a national tour to illustrate the history, scope and impact of co-operation world-wide.
The Co-operative Revolution Street Gallery consists of 24 images on three metre high installations and will remain a fixture near Perth Concert Hall, Mill Street, until 26 August.
From football clubs to farming, retail to renewables and pubs to performing arts, the free outdoor exhibition has been compiled by The Co-operative to celebrate the contribution of co-operatives to worldwide socio-economic development.
Ken Greenshields, The Co-operative’s Membership Officer for the Perth area, said: “We are delighted to bring these striking images to Perth. The pictures and narrative bring to life how co-operatives grew from humble beginnings in the mid 19th century into a global movement with an estimated one billion members worldwide today.
“The Street Gallery also illustrates the impact of co-operatives today and the significant contribution they make to poverty reduction, community cohesion, employment generation and social integration.
“It shows how co-operation can enable communities to overcome many of the challenges facing society, environment and economy and, how everyday people are not only predisposed to co-operation, but are making it happen in communities the world over – changing their world for the better by making a difference to the society that they live in.”
The Co-operative Revolution Street Gallery was created to mark the United Nations International Year of Co-operatives and has been seen by an estimated 6 million people during its tour.
To mark the Street Gallery’s stay in Perth, The Co-operative Membership are hosting a free screening of “The Rochdale Pioneers” – a film set in 1844 telling the inspirational story of the birth of the modern co-operative movement. The screening will take place at the Perth Concert Hall on 22 August. For more information email firstname.lastname@example.org or telephone 01698 737 560.
