The Co-operative agrees deal to support local football

April 11, 2012

Amateur footballers in Skye and Lochalsh have netted some extra support from The Co-operative this season, after the community retailer agreed a deal to sponsor the local competition.

The partnership means the Skye and Lochalsh Amateur League will adopt The Co-operatives name for the 2012 season, and also includes Man of the Match and Player of the Year awards.

Melanie Newdick, The Co-operative Group’s Membership Officer for Northern Scotland and Islands, said: “Grassroots football in local communities is a good fit with The Co-operative’s community values. We’re proud of our track record of serving Skye and Lochalsh, and we’re delighted to have agreed this partnership, which will benefit the local sporting community.”

Phil McCaherty, Chairman of the Skye and Lochalsh Amateur FA, said: “We’re delighted to welcome The Co-operative as the title sponsor of the Skye and Lochalsh Amateur Football League. Having the support of such a major retailer is a great boost to our communities and to our sport, and we look forward to working with The Co-operative during what I’m sure will be a competitive season.”

The Co-operative has food stores in Portree, Broadford, Kyle of Lochalsh and Mallaig.
