Co-operative Pharmacy’s first outpatient dispensary officially opened

March 21, 2012

The Co-operative Pharmacy’s first outpatient dispensary at Doncaster Royal Infirmary was officially opened this month by Chairman of Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals Foundation Trust, Chris Scholey and Managing Director of The Co-operative Pharmacy, John Nuttall.

Following a competitive tender, a seven-year contract was awarded to The Co-operative Pharmacy last August.  Expected savings to the Trust are in the region of £200,000 a year.

Since opening at the beginning of the year, a five-strong pharmacy team has dispensed more than 7,500 outpatient items for patients at the hospital’s A&E* and outpatient departments.

In addition to bringing a recognisable and reputable pharmacy brand to the hospital, the service aims to reduce waiting times for outpatients. The new pharmacy is also equipped with a consultation room to give customers greater privacy when discussing their medicines with the pharmacist.

Managing Director of The Co-operative Pharmacy, John Nuttall and Chairman of Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals Foundation Trust, Chris Scholey.

Managing Director of the largest British-owned pharmacy group, John Nuttall, said: “This is an exciting new partnership for The Co-operative Pharmacy and we are delighted to be working with Doncaster Royal Infirmary. The hospital and pharmacy teams are working well together and we have invested a lot of time training colleagues to ensure that long-lasting relationships are established.

“As a community pharmacy, we are committed to delivering a patient-focused service, in addition to helping the hospital make savings without compromising on quality.  Initial feedback is positive and we hope to build on this during the coming months.”

Chris Scholey, Trust Chairman, said: “We are extremely pleased to be working with The Co-operative Pharmacy in this joint venture to provide a high-quality outpatient dispensing service for our patients. The Trust is the first in the country to be working with the pharmacy and our patients now benefit from a much improved dispensing service with shorter waiting times and a new medicines delivery service.”
