Carbon Reduction - Delivering Efficiency

Improving the efficiency of our food distribution network

An update on the fantastic work being done in Supply Chain Logistics Service, focused on reducing our carbon footprint through continuous improvement in energy and fuel usage.

Carbon Reduction - Delivering Efficiency

We have been working to improve the efficiency of our food distribution network through numerous initiatives, such as through increasing our use of rail freight, making our road vehicles more aerodynamic and trialling new innovations.

Efficiency improvements in our Food business distribution fleet have reduced Group-wide distribution mileage by 32 million miles since 2006 (2% reduction in 2013) and saved almost 50,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions (3% reduction in 2013), and our two new BREEAM ‘Excellent’ distribution centres are now fully operational.

These improvements wouldn’t have been possible without the engagement of our Food Supply Chain Logistics employees who, via the Logistics Carbon Forum, can put forward to suggestions to further improve environmental performance across our entire distribution network.
