Loneliness is on the increase, with the devastating impacts being felt by millions every single day.
Loneliness is indiscriminate, it affects people of all ages and backgrounds and can be found in all types of communities. It can lead to a sense of despair and emotional and mental health problems such as depression and anxiety.
Companionship, reconnected communities and better health and well-being are the potential benefits that could be enjoyed by those communities that join together with The Co-op to address this alarming, hidden crisis on their doorsteps.
Loneliness and social isolation is a hidden, but very real crisis, affecting millions in our communities. Being lonely is reported as being as bad for you as smoking fifteen cigarettes a day and twice as deadly as being obese.
Imagine having no-one to turn to, no friend or family nearby, no-one to speak to for days at a time. In the UK today, about 3.7 million people over the age of 65 are living alone. With loneliness can come a sense of despair and emotional and mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. But it is not just the older population who are lonely; young people are just as much at risk, from new mums to teenagers.
It’s time we faced up to the loneliness people in our communities live with every single day; and together the Co-operative and British Red Cross will. Our partnership will deliver radical and lasting change to support isolated and lonely people across the UK, making a real difference to thousands of lives. Together, we will provide vital support to the lonely and isolated, reconnecting them to their communities and providing life changing care in their homes. We are calling on each and every one of you to join us on this journey, to support your parents, grandparents, children and neighbours; striving for a world where no-one leads a life alone.
Tackling loneliness is not an easy undertaking, but we know that together with The Co-operative employees and members we can make a real difference. We will also ensure that our partnership is fun and engaging for you all across every business. Whatever your style, wherever you are, whatever time you have, we will have a fundraising, volunteering or campaigning activity for you!
Each year, the British Red Cross helps over 1 million people in the UK. We are present in all UK communities providing unquestioning care and support to people in their darkest hour; from an older person living alone who is unable to cope to a young mother who is left housebound and isolated after an illness or accident. Our services enable vulnerable people to remain independent in their homes and give them the confidence to continue with their lives. We help and support people of all ages and backgrounds, from children, parents, young people, elderly and people with disabilities.
