What happens next?
In 1945 we raised funds for the British Red Cross, from sales of our own brand Co-operative tea. The funds that were raised were used to help vulnerable people both at home and overseas respond to the aftermath of World War 2.
Today, we’re going back to our roots, in more ways than one.
Our colleagues and members have decided that our next Charity Partner is, once more, to be the British Red Cross. This time, we’ll be working with them to tackle social isolation and loneliness.
Almost 80,000 colleagues and members took part in the vote, with them voting for the British Red Cross to be our Charity Partner.
Loneliness is indiscriminate; it’s not just about older generations, it can affect anyone at any stage of their life, regardless of circumstances – 1 in 7 of our own members and customers have told us that they suffer from social isolation and loneliness.
We are embarking on an exciting new way of doing things – rather than just handing over a cheque, we’ll be fundraising and then campaigning with the British Red Cross to bring the issue of loneliness to the fore, and connect people in our communities.
As a community retailer with its roots in campaigning we are well placed to respond to this issue, for quite a few reasons:
- As a Food business, we know how important social contact can be for people via their local shop and that food and meal times are one way we can help to bring people together
- As a funeral business, we know that we can respond to loneliness at times of bereavement and loss
- As an insurer, we can care for people, as well as property, in our neighbourhoods
- As a legal services provider, we can give people peace of mind and help them when they need it the most.
We’ll now work with the British Red Cross to develop our plans for fundraising, to be launched in September; before campaigning on the issue of loneliness. How we tackle loneliness in our communities is an exciting challenge, but one that we are confident our colleagues and members will rise to.
There will be many ways that colleagues and members can get involved in our Charity Partnership – as well as fundraising, there will be opportunities for volunteering, campaigning, helping with events, and lots more!
