In 2001, The Co-operative became the first supermarket to launch own-brand fairly traded wine, in advance of international Fairtrade standards.
Last year, in our tenth anniversary of selling Fairtrade wine, we were confirmed as the UK's largest Fairtrade wine retailer.
We've also gone beyond Fairtrade to invest in projects with wine producers across Argentina and South Africa.
LA RIOJANA CO-OPERATIVE - Argentina
La Riojana is Argentina’s largest wine co-operative and was the first winery in the country to receive Fairtrade certification in 2006. Our support has enabled the construction of a new water facility and a new secondary school.
The water project was set up to help workers from La Riojana co-operative’s vineyards, living in the village of Tilimuqui, to renovate the old water supply and give the 381-strong community access to regular, clean water. The secondary school, which specialises in agricultural studies, has supported children in Tilimuqui and surrounding towns and villages, to further their education for the first time.
South African Fairtrade Wine
We've funded a range of projects with our South African wine producers Du Toitskloof, Stellenrust Merwida and Bosman. This contribution is democratically invested each year by the producers in a range of projects including supporting education and improving housing.
Bosman, South Africa
We have been working with the Bosman Family Vineyards since 2011, and over the last 3 years have invested Faitrade Premiums and additional contributions to fund a number of activities as part of the Bovlei Community Project, such as:
- A fully operational pre-school
- A new school bus enabling students to get to school
- A new library and community centre
- Computer training, literacy and scholarship programmes including three classrooms and a computer training centre
- A Counselling room and Drug rehabilitation programme
- A Health clinic
Also, currently underway is an ambitious housing development plan to provide homes for some 120 people in the Bovlei Valley in the Western Cape.
