Introducing our ‘Sporting Heroes’ Memory Cards

We’re pleased to announce that we have partnered with Football Memories Scotland to produce ‘Sporting Heroes’ memory cards. The packs of cards will feature sporting legends from football, rugby, cricket, golf and speedway and will be used to help trigger the memories of people suffering from the effects of Dementia.

Scotland legend, Joe Jordan helps launch new memory cards

The cards are in addition to our Memory Boxes that are used across the UK in our funeral homes as recognition aids. First started in Dunfermline by our Logistics Manager, Kenny Maclachlan, the boxes are filled with memorabilia from the past such as vinyl records, old photos, Co-op stamp books etc. and in many cases the items have been donated by people in the local community. Kenny recognised that in his own community, people struggling with memory loss were often also extremely lonely as a result. So the idea was born to take these boxes to care homes/day centres as a way to prompt conversations and spark memories of the past.

The scheme has been so successful that memory boxes are now used across the UK in our funeral homes, and so we’re delighted to now be working with Football Memories Scotland to produce the wonderful ‘Sporting Heroes’ cards. The cards will be used in the same way as our memory boxes: to spark conversations and memories and to have a positive impact on people living with dementia.

Paul Denton, Managing Director of Co-op Funeralcare commented: “We’re so pleased to be working with Football Memories Scotland on this extremely worthwhile initiative. Across the UK, we’re involved in thousands of community activities. From bereavement groups to coffee mornings, we’re continuously looking for new ways to support the communities we serve. These ‘Sporting Heroes’ cards will be a great addition to our memory boxes and the work that we already do to support those living with dementia.’’
