Coffee has been an important part of our 26 year history of Fairtrade.
Prices were at a 30 year low in 2003 and farmers were struggling to afford to grow coffee. That’s when we decided to switch our entire own brand range to Fairtrade – a first for any retailer. We’ve since supported thousands of smallholder coffee producers in Colombia and Guatemala.
Supporting coffee producers in Columbia
In Colombia, Rosa has been provided with new coffee bean drying equipment. We supported over 5,000 smallholder coffee producers from Aguadas Co-operative to improve their coffee crop. Since then we’ve used funds from our Growing Stories campaign (2015-16) to support a new community education programme. Women in Rosa’s community have taken part in training on nutrition, food safety and skills to grow their own fruit and veg.
Our Fairtrade stories
Discover how climate change has affected coffee farmers in Kenya, discouraging young people from getting involved. Co-op is helping to tackle the issues by supporting Fairtrade Africa's East Africa Youth Programme, sought to create more opportunities for the involvement of young people in the coffee value chain.
