CEO Steve Murrells shares an update about how Co-op is supporting communities across the UK as the pandemic continues to bring new challenges.
Hello all,
As we head towards the end of another unusual year, I wanted to take a moment on behalf of everyone here at Co-op, to wish those of you celebrating, the very best for Christmas and the new year.
Given the latest Covid guidelines announcement, I also wanted to reassure you that we are continuing to ensure we do our best to keep our colleagues, customers and members safe and protected across all our stores and funeral homes.
It’s so important to us that we can continue to provide you with all our services, despite the new challenges the pandemic continues to bring. We’re committed to supporting you in every way we can so we can all enjoy Christmas together.
Here are some updates on what we are doing.
Keeping you safe
In line with the previous and latest government guidance, we are continuing to maintain and implement in-store safety measures, such as face covering reminders and hand sanitising stations to keep our customers and colleagues protected.
- Hand sanitising and basket cleaning stations are available and protective screens are in places at tills and self-service stations.
- We are regularly cleaning our stores with a focus on things such as card payment devices.
- You will also see signage and hear in-store radio messaging reminding everyone to wear face coverings, unless exempt, and to be mindful and respect people’s personal space when shopping.
- We have traffic light entry systems in a number of stores to help customers maintain safe distances from other shoppers.

Our colleagues
Our colleagues in depots and stores, and our drivers, play a pivotal role in helping to feed the nation, and we’ve gone to great lengths to maintain staffing levels and support them in making sure we can pick and deliver products, and get them onto our shelves for all our customers and members. We are working tirelessly with our suppliers to ensure good stock levels.
Kindness and co-operation towards one another is what has and will continue to see us through this, and we trust you’ll consider this and the efforts of all our front line colleagues.

Supporting our communities
Over the last 12 months, you’ve made amazing things happen for your community just by choosing Co-op. Together, with your loyalty, we’ve supported over 4,500 local communities who got the help they deserved and needed.
- Thanks to our members, together we’ve raised £100 million with our colleagues and customers to support 25,000 local community projects over the past five years.
- The money has also supported national organisations and charities across the country, including our Co-op’s partnership with environmental charity Hubbub. We have now committed to doubling Hubbub’s network of community fridges by funding a further 250, which will save a total of 34 million meals from going to waste annually.
- As a Co-op Member, you can select which local causes you’d like to support, and receive special deals for yourself through the Co-op app.
- You can also get involved in events and activities in your local community. Co-operate, our online community centre, includes more information on things happening locally to you.
Thank you for reading and for being part of our Co-op.
Stay safe and take care,
