Celebrity Send Off is a three-part digital mini series that gives a well-known famous face a unique opportunity: the chance to watch their own funeral. From UFO-themed funeral flowers to outdoor services, each week one half of the celebrity pairing will be tasked with arranging a funeral fit for their loved one.

We all want different things from life and no two people are the same. Which means funerals don’t need to be the same and can reflect who you are. In our ‘Planning for Death’ report, 45% of people surveyed said they have discussed their funeral wishes with their family, whilst over half (55%) said they haven’t broached the subject with their loved ones.

Talking about your funeral wishes now means your friends and family will know what you want when the time comes. Starting this conversation ensures we’re all remembered the way we want to be.

Episode 1: Shaun and Bez

Shaun Ryder and Bez became best friends during their time in the Happy Mondays, and more recently have starred on Channel 4’s Celebrity Gogglebox.

In the first episode of Celebrity Send Off, Bez takes on the role of arranger and Shaun prepares to think hard about what he’d like for his own funeral. Both Bez and Shaun agree that they’d like to respect Shaun’s Catholic upbringing with a traditional church service.

There are times where they’re shocked at how much they disagree, including burial vs cremation, transport method, and even flowers – all things that would have been easier to agree on if they’d talked openly about their funeral wishes beforehand.

Bez also wants to nod to Shaun’s experience with UFOs and Extra-Terrestrial life, which inspires his choice of flowers and wake.

Watch along below to see what Bez has in store for Shaun.

Episode 2: Marcus and Mica

Husband and wife, Marcus Luther and Mica Ven have been married for 15 years, and first appeared on Channel 4’s Gogglebox in 2018, instantly becoming one the nation’s best loved couples, known for their wit and warmth.

In this episode of Celebrity Send Off, Marcus takes on the role of arranger and Mica prepares to think hard about what she’d like for her own funeral.

Marcus has lots of creative ideas to celebrate his wife, from a cardboard coffin which can be personalised by the congregation, to white doves being released in her honour and an elaborate Gogglebox-inspired flower display.

As for Mica, she’s claustrophobic, scared of doves, and wants to honour other things than Gogglebox… so she pretty much wanted the opposite of these decisions. If only they’d discussed their funeral wishes more openly!

Episode 3: Kriss and Shakira

The final episode of Celebrity Send Off follows the story of Olympic medallist and national treasure, Kriss Akabusi, and his daughter, Shakira, a speaker, presenter, author and exercise coach.

Kriss and Shakira have always talked openly about difficult topics like death, but they’ve never discussed the details of what Kriss would like at his funeral.

In this episode, Shakira takes on the role of arranger and Kriss prepares to think hard about what he’d like for his own funeral. Kriss would like to stay true to his roots and be buried in Nigeria, while Shakira focuses on celebrating Kriss’ love for nature with an outdoors funeral and planting a memory tree.

Although Kriss is touched by the special details Shakira has planned, from her poetic eulogy to inviting one his best friends to be the celebrant, watching the footage back emphasises the importance of talking about funeral wishes earlier.

(Almost) anything goes

We once decorated a coffin with a Grand National winner. We buried someone with a trumpet, their prized possession. We even used red London buses as part of the cortege.

Your funeral wishes should reflect who you are and what feels right to you. You could want yours to be colourful, unique or something more traditional. It can be almost anything you want it to be.

The more someone knows about your funeral wishes, the less worried they will be about doing the right thing when the time comes.

The Evolution of Funerals

As the UK's largest funeral provider, we at Co-op Funeralcare know the importance of staying ahead of changing trends in the industry. We want every funeral we carry out to be personalised and as unique as the person it's for. As part of this effort, we've commissioned research to uncover how the nation's perceptions are shifting when it comes to funerals.

The results of the report are based on insights from our funeral directors, who carried out over 500,000 funerals in the last five years, as well as the views of 4,000 UK respondents. The results revealed that an estimated 38 million people (68%) in the UK believe funerals are becoming more of a ‘celebration of life’ rather than a time of reflection. When carrying out similar research back in 2019, this figure was reported at 58%.

Celebrity Send Off on Channel 4 has helped to normalise the conversation around a taboo topic, and we hope that with this new report, the nation will be encouraged to talk to their loved ones further about their funeral wishes.
