What are defined third party fees?
Third party fees are charges for services not provided by a funeral director.
Defined third party fees are those that Co-op funeral plans will either cover (Silver and Gold) or contribute an amount to (Simple and Bronze) when the plan is redeemed.
For cremation these fees include:
- cremation fees at a local crematorium
- officiant’s fee to perform the service at the crematorium
- doctors’ fees (if applicable)
For burial these fees include:
- burial or interment fee (single), gravedigger fee where applicable
- officiant’s fees to conduct a service at a local cemetery chapel or church or at the graveside
None of our funeral plans include or contribute towards the cost of buying a burial plot.
Do Co-op funeral plans cover third party fees?
Our Silver and Gold funeral plans are fully guaranteed, meaning that we guarantee to cover the cost of all items within the plan, including our services and any defined third party fees. As prices and availability vary across the UK, none of our burial plans include the cost of buying a grave.
Once you’ve paid the balance of your guaranteed plan, your loved ones will have nothing more to pay for the services included in your plan, even if prices rise in the future.
Our Simple and Bronze funeral plans cover all the essential services for a funeral and provide a set contribution that can be used towards defined third party fees. If the cost of defined third party fees exceeds the contribution amount, your loved ones will have to pay the difference.
If you choose a Bronze Plan, we guarantee that this contribution will cover the cremation fees. If a balance remains, this can be used to help pay officiant and doctors’ fees (if applicable).
As prices are likely to change during the life of your funeral plan, we will adjust the cap on the charges that we pay to others to reflect general inflation (based on the Consumer Price Index measure of inflation).
Some common questions
Buy a funeral plan online, at a Co-op funeral home, or by calling our funeral planning team on 08000884883
You can choose to pay either in full, in monthly payments over 6 or 12 months, or monthly payments over 2-25 years.
If you’re paying over 6-12 months, there are no additional charges. However, when paying over 2-25 years, there are additional charges. If you choose to pay in monthly payments, you’ll need to pay a minimum £99 deposit when you buy the plan. You can pay a bigger deposit if you'd like to lower the monthly costs. To find out how much a fixed funeral plan will cost, use our online calculator
Our plans are available to anyone over the age of 18, and we don’t ask any medical or health related questions. If you’re paying monthly over 2-25 years, all payments must be completed by your 80th birthday.
Someone else can pay for your plan but you’re still responsible for making sure payments are made. You’ll own and control your plan and will receive the documents relating to it. If the person paying for your plan is paying monthly over 2-25 years, that person must be 18 years of age or over. All payments must be completed by their 80th birthday.
All of our plans can be personalised to include special wishes and requests. When you buy a fixed plan, you’ll receive a ‘funeral service request’ form in the post along with the summary of your plan. You just need to write your wishes on the form and send it back to us, and we’ll keep it safe until the time of the funeral.
If you buy a tailor-made plan, your personal requests can be recorded with the help of our colleagues at the funeral home. They can either record your wishes at the time of taking out the plan or add them later when you’ve had time to think it over.
If you change your mind, you can email our funeral planning team at funeralplans@coop.co.uk and we can change your personal requests. There are no limits to the number of times personal requests can be updated, these are amended at no extra charge.
*Price of £18.96 per month is based on a 50-year-old purchasing a Simple Funeral Plan at £3,095 over 25 years (total amount repayable £5789.32), monthly payments for other plans will be different. You can choose to spread the cost of paying for your plan over 2-25 years. A minimum of £99 deposit is required to be paid when buying a plan on monthly instalments, this will be taken off the plan price. A charge is included in the plan cost if you choose to pay over 2-25 years. A maximum age limit applies to the Plan Purchaser. This option is available to anyone as long as the plan is paid for in full before the Plan Purchaser's 80th birthday.
^If you choose to make monthly payments over 2–25 years, your plan will include the Co-op Commitment. If you die after 12 months, we promise to deliver all the services provided in your plan, even if you’ve not made all the payments. If you die as a result of an accident within the first 12 months of your plan, you’ll be covered by our Co-op Commitment. All payments must be paid up to date and your funeral must be carried out by one of our funeral directors. See our terms and conditions.
