Community pulls together after vandalism

When faced with the mindless vandalism of the Hadrian School in Benwell, colleagues Craig Robson and Cheryle Waters wanted to do something to help.

The school, which caters for children with additional needs, was targeted with appalling graffiti, windows of minibuses were smashed and paint thrown on sculptures and toys. The thugs also caused damage to the children’s much loved garden area.

Craig and Cheryle asked around their contacts and were given the name of a local garden centre – Bloomin Al’s in Birtley, who were more than happy to provide a whole car full of free flowers and plants to replace what was destroyed at the school.

Craig heard about the school’s plight as his friend’s daughter is a pupil there. Cheryle said "When we visited their home to drop off the donated flowers the look of pure joy on the little girl’s face was priceless."

It didn’t end there though, Craig and Cheryle were then given the details of a firm who wanted to donate garden ornaments to the school, and they’ll be picking them up soon.

The work is still taking place to fix all of the damage caused, but the garden will be looking great again soon thanks to the community spirit showed by everyone involved.
