Provide a Prom
Here at Co-op Funeralcare Mexborough we had an idea, a pipe dream, to see if we could get the backing and support of local businesses and self employed members of our community to work together to "Provide A Prom" for a local student.
Bringing the community together at Mexborough
Samantha Ward, Funeral Arranger explains how she turned fairy godmother to provide a student with the perfect prom package.
I started by posting on a local village social media page with a vague request of support from local people with certain services... hair stylist, make up artist and nail technician. I received responses quite quickly and made arrangements with them to provide these services to our student. Whilst doing this I had emailed a local wedding and prom dress business asking if they would be able to support us with the all important dress. I was completely taken aback when they emailed back saying yes. We also have a photographer who is my apprenticeship coach, Sarah Hirst from People Plus who has gladly given her time and knowledge of photography for the event.
I had contacted two local schools to see if there would be interest from them in this project with a reply from one of them, De Warenne Academy in Conisbrough.
My contact there was the learning manager Mr Lewis Brown who has been consulting with the teaching staff to select a student who they feel would be most deserving of this.
They chose Alicia - a young lady who, in his words is "a model student." She does everything that is asked of her and more, and is arranging her own college applications to help support her career. She is an asset to the school.
When we broke the exciting news to Alicia she was absolutely overjoyed! We met up with her and Mr Brown back in February for an informal chat about the plans, then provided her with a list of names and contact numbers for all the people involved so she could start making appointments and bookings with them. When she found out which dress store was helping she was over the moon, saying she really wanted something from that shop. With a stunning red dress and an amazing manicure, Alicia was ready for the prom!
On the day of the prom, we whisked her off in a silver limousine to Conisbrough Castle for photographs, as is tradition in the village. She was then joined by other friends to make the trip to Hellaby Hall Hotel for the prom.
I can't tell you how happy I was when I saw her that day - I was like a proud parent. It has been so worthwhile bringing the community together to allow a bright young student to attend her prom in style.
