Tips for driving in the snow

Car driving through the snow

With snow likely to fall in many parts of the UK over the winter, we've pulled together some tips for staying safe while out on the roads.

Before you set off

Firstly, make sure your car is roadworthy before you get behind the wheel.

Clear any snow from your vehicle, check the tyres and test your windscreen wipers. It's also a good idea to top up your petrol, oil and water, particularly ahead of long journeys.

On the road

Remember that speed limit signs mean maximum speed. If there’s ice on the roads, you need to take extra care and consider your speed.

Leave more room between you and the car in front, as it will take longer to slow down on slippery roads.

Low winter sunlight can impair vision too, so take your time at junctions and make a full assessment of the traffic conditions before pulling out.

Staying safe

If you get stuck in bad weather, it's important to have some essentials (like a bottle of water, snacks and a blanket) in your car to stay safe.
