Buildings and contents insurance

When you buy Co-op combined buildings and contents insurance, you get 2 separate policies. Each policy has its own terms and conditions. Having both policies with us may help make things easier and quicker if you need to make a claim.

Buildings insurance

Buildings insurance covers damage to the structure of your home and any outbuildings. This includes walls, roof, floors, and permanent fixtures and fittings.

It typically covers damage caused by:

  • fire, explosion, lightning or earthquake
  • smoke
  • storm or flood
  • vandalism or malicious acts
  • theft or attempted theft

You’re expected to maintain your property and poor upkeep could lead to a rejected claim.

Buildings insurance is not legally required, but most mortgage lenders make it a condition of the loan.

Contents insurance

Contents insurance covers the cost of repairing or replacing your belongings inside the home. This is anything you would normally take with you if you moved home.

This can include:

  • furniture
  • kitchen appliances
  • curtains and bedding
  • clothing
  • TVs
  • computers and devices
  • jewellery

Items are usually covered if they’re stolen or damaged by events such as fire, water leaks, theft or flooding.
