What is student contents insurance?

Student contents insurance, also known as renters insurance, covers all the usual items you take to university. It protects your things like mobile phones, laptops, and bikes if they get stolen, lost or accidentally damaged.

Whether you’re living in student accommodation, a flatshare or a student house, our policies have been created with student renters in mind.

For halls of residence, you can cover the things in your room if it has its own room number and lockable door. You can also include common areas to cover your things in shared spaces, like kitchens and living areas.

If you live in a shared house, a total of 6 housemates can be added to a policy without the need for a lock on each bedroom, which some traditional insurers require. However, cover will not apply to theft without signs of a break in.

You can also add out of home cover to protect your gadgets and bike when you're out and about.

Do you need student cover?

First, check your parents' home insurance policy. Some cover you when you move away, but it might not provide the right cover for you. Also, if the university is providing your room, check if they include insurance for your stuff. If not, consider getting student contents insurance.

We know time can be short so we want to take up as little of it as possible. You just need to tell us some information about you such as:

  • your address
  • your email address
  • how many people live with you
  • if you have had any previous claims
2

Design a policy to suit you.

There are contents cover options between £10,000 and £40,000 per person. You can also choose from a range of add-ons and the excess amount you will pay with a successful claim.

3

Decide how you want to pay.

Pay monthly or annually at no extra cost. If you need to amend or cancel your policy you will not be charged. You can do this online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
