Critical illness cover with life insurance
This can be included as an add on when you buy life insurance and is provided by L&G.
How it works
Critical illness cover is a way of protecting you and your family against the financial implications you would face if you were diagnosed with a critical illness. It can be added for an extra cost when taking out term life insurance.
You and loved ones could receive a payout if you’re diagnosed with one of the specified critical illnesses covered during the length of your policy, and you survive for 14 days from diagnosis.
It could help with childcare costs, household bills or to help maintain your standard of living if you need to take time off work to recover.
The illnesses covered are explained in the policy booklet and include:
- cancer
- heart attack
- stroke
- dementia
Limitations
- If you die then the cover will end for a single life policy. If you have a joint policy, when the first person dies and makes a valid claim, your critical illness cover policy can continue.
- There will not be a payout if you are diagnosed with or undergo a medical procedure for a critical illness that doesn't meet the definition or if death occurs within 14 days of diagnosis of one of the critical illnesses covered.
- If some elements of cover are restricted based on the information you provide, you will be informed what has been excluded in your policy booklet under 'What you are not covered for'.
- Some types of cancer are not included and you need to have permanent symptoms to make a claim for some illnesses.
- This is not a savings or investment product and has no cash value unless a valid claim is made.
Children's critical illness cover
If you add critical illness cover for an additional cost when you take out a life cover policy, children’s critical illness cover is automatically included.
Child accident hospitalisation
If your child is admitted to hospital with physical injuries, immediately following an accident, for a minimum of 28 consecutive days, you will receive £5,000. The definition of 'physical injury' is one that has resulted solely and directly from unforeseen, external, violent or visible means and must be independent from any other cause.
The benefit will only be paid if the accident doesn’t result in a payout under children’s critical illness cover. One claim will be paid per child, to a maximum of 2 children. If the same child is covered by more than one policy issued by us, a maximum of £10,000 will be paid for that child under this benefit.
Child funeral benefit
£4,000 will be contributed towards funeral costs if your child dies. Up to a maximum of 2 child funeral benefit claims are covered per policy.
The claim would not be paid if:
- the child's condition was present at birth
- the cause of death was present before the policy was put in place
-
- a critical illness claim for the child has already been paid
Childcare benefit
If you, the parent, make a critical illness claim that is accepted, you will receive up to £1,000 towards childcare costs whilst you recover. The claim would be paid upon receipt of proof of payment from a registered child-minder and is applicable to a natural child, legally adopted child or step-child under 5 years old. This benefit covers childcare that takes place in the 18 months following your diagnosis.
Family accommodation benefit
For every night your child spends in a hospital in the 3 months immediately following diagnosis of one of the critical illnesses covered children's critical illness cover you will receive £100 per night, up to a maximum of £1,000.
