How to register a death in Cardiff

In Cardiff, you need to register someone's death within 5 days unless the circumstances of the death are being investigated by a coroner. Your local funeral director can help you with this process.

To register a death, you’ll need to make an appointment with your local Registrar’s Office. As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, some Registrar’s are registering deaths only over the phone, so you may not have to visit the office in person.

See the Cardiff Register Office website for more information and updates.

To read more about what’s involved in registering a death, we have a guide to registering a death here.

The cost of a funeral will depend on the choices you make. This could include what type of funeral you want (for example a direct cremation or burial, or a traditional funeral), the flowers you'd like or the type of hearse you choose.

We have a range of flexible funeral options, which means that if there’s something included in a funeral you don’t want, you may be able to remove it, and the price will be adjusted too.

Your local funeral director in Cardiff will guide you through all our funerals and help you choose one that suits both your wishes, and your budget.

Third party costs

Where you live will also have an impact on how much a funeral will cost. This is due to costs paid on your behalf by a funeral director for services such as; church fees, cremation fees, burial fees or musicians at the funeral. These are called third party costs (sometimes called disbursements, third party fees or third party charges).

You’ll need to pay for these within 24 hours of making funeral arrangements. To find out how much third party costs may be for a cremation or a burial funeral at your local funeral home in Cardiff, use our funeral cost calculator to see an estimate of funeral costs in Cardiff. Your local funeral director in Cardiff will also be able to give you accurate and up to date third party costs.
