6 tips for a sustainable lifestyle

Children putting plastic bottles in a recycling box

Enjoying a more eco-friendly lifestyle doesn’t have to cost the earth. There are plenty of small changes you can make around the home that will save you money as well as being better for the planet.

Here are our top 6 sustainability tips if you’d like to lead a greener lifestyle:

Say no to single-use plastic

Every year, we use an average of 175 water bottles per person in the UK. Say no by switching to a bottle made from glass, stainless steel or dishwater-safe and BPA-free reusable plastic. Think about your toiletries too, ditching the plastic for refillable options or soap and shampoo bars.

Unplug your ‘energy vampires’

Computers, lamps and TVs draw power even when they’re in standby mode. Mobile phone chargers left on overnight are one of the worst culprits for unused energy too. Stop them draining your power by unplugging or switching off at the socket.

Hang it out to dry

The Great British weather means it’s not always possible, but hanging your laundry out to dry instead of turning on the tumble dryer can reduce your carbon footprint and save money on your energy bills.

Get fridge-smart

The way you use your fridge will affect how much energy and money it needs to run. Keep the door closed as much as possible, cool leftovers before refrigerating them, and replace the door’s rubber seal at the first signs of wear and tear.

Water wisely

It’s possible to keep your garden green and reduce the amount of water you use. Tips include installing a water butt to collect rainwater, using ‘grey water’ (or water left over from things like baths, showers and dishwashers) and swapping your hose for a watering can.

Eat more sustainably

As the production of meat is a major contributor to climate change, going meat-free for just one day a week can help the planet and save you money too.

Co-op has plenty of meat-free recipes and inspiration. When it comes to your vegetables, consider eating in season or growing your own too. You don’t even need much space to start your own vegetable garden – get started with these tips from the BBC.
