New driver?

Here’s how to get a good deal on your car insurance

Cars in a queue at a set of traffic lights

Whether you passed your test at 17 or 47, getting your driving licence can open up all sorts of exciting opportunities and adventures.

But car insurance can be expensive for new drivers, so it's worth knowing how to get a good deal on your first policy.

Without much experience behind the wheel, new drivers are deemed more likely to be involved in an accident. Unfortunately, this means insurers will charge you a higher premium for cover.

There are ways you can bring that initial cost down. These are our tips to consider when taking out your very first car insurance policy.

Pick your wheels carefully

The car you drive will affect the cost of your insurance. Cars are rated on factors such as their performance, cost of repairs and value. They are then given an insurance group from 1-50. Pick a car from one of the lower insurance groups and you’ll pay a cheaper premium.

Increase the excess

An excess is the amount you pay in the event of a claim. By increasing the voluntary excess, which starts at £50, you will reduce the premium.

Just make sure you can afford to pay the excess if you do need to make a claim. Check your cover as many young drivers and those without much experience will also be subject to a compulsory excess.

Add experience

Whether it’s your partner or a parent, if they are going to be driving your car, including a more experienced driver on your policy can help to bring down the cost of cover.

But don’t be tempted to make them the main driver if you’ll be behind the wheel most of the time. This is a form of insurance fraud, known as fronting. If you are caught doing this, you risk invalidating your insurance and potentially even a criminal prosecution.

Consider a new driver policy

Young driver and pay-how-you-drive car insurance policies can be a good idea for those first few years. These use a black box or smartphone app to monitor your driving, with the cost of cover coming down if you are safe. You’ll also get feedback on your driving, which can help to make you a better driver.

Co-op Insurance has a young driver policy and if you stick with us until your second renewal, we may be able to offer you car insurance with no black box, subject to status.

Protect your car

Fitting your car with an alarm or other security device may help to reduce your insurance premium as it reduces the risk of theft. You could also save on the cost of cover if your car is parked on your drive or in a garage at night, rather than on the street.
