Breakdown cover is now only available as an add-on to our car insurance.
Existing customers
You can no longer buy our standalone breakdown cover.
If you are an existing customer, you are still covered. We will notify you about what will happen when your policy is due for renewal.
If you have Co-op Car or Van Insurance with breakdown cover, this change does not affect you.

If you have purchased breakdown cover as an optional extra for Co-op Young Driver, Ecoinsurance or Car Insurance, you will need to use alternative breakdown and accident recovery contact details.

Key policy limitations
You must have a serviceable spare tyre for your vehicle, including any caravan or trailer attached. If the vehicle was not designed to carry a spare wheel, you will need to carry the appropriate aerosol repair kit.
Your vehicle must be under 16 years old and only used for private use. We do not provide breakdown cover for hire cars or commercial vehicles.
Your vehicle must be:
- no longer than 5.5 metres including tow bar
- no heavier than 3,500 kilograms
- not higher than 3 metres
- no wider than 2.3 metres including wing mirrors
AXA will choose a suitable recovery solution depending on your individual circumstances. In some cases it may be necessary for customers to pay for overnight accommodation and claim it back, if AXA are unable to book and pay for it on their behalf.
Accommodation is subject to a maximum cost of £80 per person per night (up to a maximum of £500).
The hire car provided will be available for a maximum period of 24 hours, and will have up to a 1600cc engine.

Calls are charged at local rates from landline and mobiles. If your phone has inclusive minutes these calls are normally included.
Co-op Insurance Services Limited will receive a percentage commission from your insurance payments.
