Just as we reach for our jumpers and tend to spend more time indoors, our pets’ needs can change during the winter months too. Some small changes to your pet care routine can help them stay healthy and happy until spring.
Winter brings a different set of health risks for your pet. As well as being colder, there can also be snow and ice, leaving all but those with the thickest of coats feeling the chill. Poor weather and shorter days can also mean that activity levels drop, as pets and their owners spend more time indoors.
It’s important to keep your pets warm when the temperatures drop. Dogs shouldn’t be left outside on their own and you may want to invest in a dog coat or jumper if yours feels the cold. Dog boots can also protect their feet from the cold.
Cats will seek out the heat, so make sure they have a warm bed somewhere draught-free for when they’re not perched on top of a radiator. This feline love for heat can also mean they might sleep under the bonnet of your car to take advantage of the warm engine. Before you drive anywhere, check they’re not there.
If you have outdoor pets, such as rabbits or hamsters, they will appreciate some extra bedding in the winter. You may also want to insulate their hutches with blankets and make sure they don't get waterlogged if it does rain or snow.
The cold and wet means you may need to take extra measures to look after your pets’ health in winter. Snow, rock salt and grit can hurt a dog’s feet, so check their paws and brush or wash it off if necessary. You might also want to invest in a reflective collar or jacket, or a light for your dog, so they are visible to motorists if you walk them in the dark.
Cats, and some dogs, are also likely to get less exercise in the winter as they or their owners shun the outdoors. Keep an eye on their weight as it may be necessary to cut back on their food.
Although many dog owners stick to the daily walks whatever the weather, it’s common for pets to get less exercise in the winter. Keeping them entertained and active is important.
Many cats will enjoy playtime with their favourite toys, or you can download an app for cats and watch them chase virtual fish, mice and balls of wool on your phone or tablet.
Dogs will appreciate their regular walk routine, but if the weather is really bad, make sure they get their exercise at home or in the garden. Soft balls and squeaky chew toys will keep them entertained, or you can invest in an interactive dog puzzle to keep boredom at bay.
A few simple changes to your pet care routine will ensure they don’t feel the cold this winter. Co-op Insurance can also help you look after your pets. Visit our pet insurance page to find out more.
