Our car insurance policies

We offer two types of car insurance: comprehensive, and third party, fire and theft.

Comprehensive gives you the most cover, but it usually costs more. Third party, fire and theft is a simpler option and tends to be cheaper. With either type, you can choose add ons like breakdown help or legal support.

Comprehensive car insurance

This is our highest level of cover. It protects your car if it’s damaged, even if the accident is your fault. It also covers fire, theft and some injury claims. You get extra benefits too, such as 24/7 accident recovery if your car can’t be driven after a crash.

Third party, fire and theft

This covers damage to other people’s cars and injuries to other people. It also covers your car if it’s stolen or damaged by fire. It doesn’t cover damage to your own car or if you’re hurt in an accident.

You can add extra cover when you buy your car insurance. These include:

What is car insurance?

Car insurance helps pay if something goes wrong when you’re driving. Some types help pay to fix your car if it’s damaged or stolen. Others only help pay if you damage someone else’s car or property. What’s covered depends on the type you choose. If you make a claim, you’ll usually need to pay an excess – this is the amount you pay yourself before the insurance helps with the rest.

Why do I need car insurance?

You must have car insurance by law, unless your car is registered as off the road. Without insurance, you could incur a fixed penalty and penalty points. Also in some cases you could get an unlimited fine and disqualified from driving if the case went to court.

What Co-op Car Insurance does not cover

There are certain things our insurance does not cover, these include:

  • professional driving instruction
  • any journeys made as part of motor trade operations
  • hiring your car to someone else
  • motor racing
  • track days

How your car insurance is calculated

Here are some of the things that affect the price of your car insurance:

  • Insurance Premium Tax (IPT) – there’s a 12% tax set by the government that’s added to all car insurance.
  • your age and driving history – older drivers and those who’ve been driving longer usually pay less.
  • where you live – we look at claim levels in your area, like theft, damage, or busy roads.
  • your car – some cars cost more to insure, based on their make, model, and past claims.
  • how you use your car – if you drive a lot or use your car to get to work, you might pay more.

Ways to get cheaper car insurance

These tips could help lower the cost of your car insurance if it seems high:

  • become a member – Co-op members get an exclusive discount on car insurance if matched with our membership database during the quote process. This discount is not available on add ons.
  • build up your No Claims Discount (NCD) - if you do not make a claim this year, you can save money in the future.
  • get a quote 28 days before your renewal date – prices are often cheaper if you look early.
  • pick a higher voluntary excess – this is what you pay if you claim. A higher amount can lower your price, but it will mean you will get less back when you make a claim. Make sure you choose an amount that you can afford to pay if you need to make a claim
  • employment status - check the occupation details you've given are correct and let us know if they change. What you do for a living can affect how much you pay for insurance.
